The 14th China (Hefei) International Garden Expo is located at the abandoned Hefei Luogang Airport. The planned land area is 323 hectares, and there are 148 buildings left on the site. How to renew and utilize them is the most important problem, especially there are many scattered low-rise buildings on the site.

In the master plan, we put forward the guiding ideology of "integration of exhibition and garden as one", use the open space between the existing buildings as the exhibition garden, transform the building into an indoor exhibition space during the exhibition, and become an independent commercial unit after the exhibition, and then maintaining the garden. It is hoped that the "building & garden" will lead the exhibition during the Expo, and the garden will be managed by business after the Expo. In urban renewal, it not only activates the property value of existing buildings, but also continues the legacy of the Garden Expo.

As the largest building in Luogang Airport, the terminal building is planned to be transformed into the main venue of the Expo. The terminal first opened in 1977 and was expanded in 1996, 2002 and 2008. The length is about 210 meters and the width is about 80 meters.

Design Strategy:

Discriminate and analyze the value of historic buildings, and rationally define the scope of protection and renovation. The 1977 terminal building and flight control tower will be kept relatively intact. Its historical charm can be felt in both external form and internal space.

Expansion in different periods resulted in different heights on the roof. The design complies with these architectural features and puts terraced gardens to carry the spirit of garden Expo.

The interior spaces must be compatible and adaptable to changing usage needs after the Expo.

Reorganized functions and circulations to make full use of the original space as much as possible.
